The Beatles Play Girly Music

February 2, 2011

Now, I know youtube comments don’t demonstrate the height of humanity’s intelligence.

But I came across this comment while watching an excellent video of War Pigs by Black Sabbath [and indeed, you can get the same comments on any Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple or any other old rock band with an unfortunately conceited audience]:

“Fuck me what a band! Everyone is just a bunch of fuckin girlie puffs now! Ah When bands were bands and not manufactured bollox designed for adolescent girls walls! Rock the fuck on Y’all!”

Firstly, his use of y’all is disappointingly lame. As a pioneer of such vernacular amongst white people, he is disturbingly lacking in bodacity.

Secondly, as is unfortunate with all of these comments, the commenter demonstrates their lack of knowledge of music by claiming that their particular brand of music, in this case, 70s hard rock, is the ultimate form of creativity and has never since been paralleled. It’s typical nostalgic bias – reminiscent of those who deny the integrity or importance of Fusion, because “it isn’t jazz” and doesn’t swing.

Lastly, it’s completely inaccurate, or perhaps hypocritical. After all, many many acts in the early 60s were very manufactured – session musicians would often play on their records (just ask Jimmy Page, he did a lot of them) – bands like the Monkees were completely artificial for quite a while too. Not to mention that perhaps the most important musical act of the latter twentieth century were the undeniable heart-throbs of many adolescent girls. In fact they were even infamous for the volume of wails that they elicited.

I personally think it’s a royal shame there aren’t more bands like Black Sabbath – nowadays especially, but god knows that them, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple were amazing creative and musical forces. That said, to simply compare every act to them is indicative of someone with a limited and closed mind towards music.

Honestly, if you think Led Zeppelin are the pinnacle of music then you’re seriously missing out.

Girl: Ew! You like the Monkees? You know they don’t write their own songs.
    Marge: They do so!
Girl: They don’t even play their own instruments.
    Marge: No…no!
Girl: That’s not even Michael Nesmith’s real hat.
    Marge: Aah!

Zweig: Kids can be so cruel.
Marge: But it’s true. They didn’t write their own songs or play their own instruments.
Zweig: The Monkees weren’t about music, Marge. They were about rebellion, about political and social upheaval!

I still think that picture of the owl was the best part of this blog.
